Throw down-Level 2 course pushes your skills further than Throw down-Level 1. Held over 8 x 3hr weekly lessons. Previous Throw-down Level 1 students are to join Level 2 by INVITE ONLY. Your tutor will let you know if you have reached the skill level to advance. If you are new to MdR Ceramics and not sure of your of your level, please email Melanie to discuss. This course allows students to continue to learn at a progressive level and expand on existing knowledge. As a REQUIREMENT, you must successfully centre clay, control throwing cylinders and make repetitive forms (similar shape, height and width). Throwing is more independent than Level 1, expanding on intuitive throwing control to make intermediate shapes and understanding a clay body under force. *Aimed at students with good even throwing skills. And want to discover or expand on glaze technology with an introduction to Glaze Chemistry. **No basic foundational steps are covered in Throw-down Level 2, only in Throw-down Level 1! Course covers: • Throwing bigger repetitive forms (first lesson.) • Formation of different utilitarian shapes. • How to successfully increase clay weight thrown. • Various throwing techniques through tool use. • Lidded forms (gallery and flange formation.) • Glazing techniques. • Understanding clay bodies and the different firing ranges. • An introduction to glaze chemistry: base glaze with additions of oxides and stains. Glaze Lab: The final class (week 8) is Glaze Lab, where you will be guided through the glazing process. Glaze Lab costs $6.00 per piece successfully made during class. You will use an amazing selection of MdR glazes and learn how to layer up to three glazes. All glazes are made in-house at MdR Ceramics and are food-safe. After the final firing, you will have a selection of your handmade creations to take home or gift away! Price includes: • Tool use. Feel free to bring your own! • The use of Mid-fire stoneware clay. • Glaze Chemistry class/materials/class notes. • Intimate class sizes. • Longer in-class time allows more hands-on clay time. • Tuition ***Additional clay over the 8kg course limit must be purchased separately.
